Welcome to the University of Withywood

Welcome to the University of Withywood website!  We are a team of volunteers operating in and around a large disadvantaged estate in South Bristol. We began in the autumn of 1987 and since 1996 we have been a registered charity.

The aims of the University of Withywood

Our founder and key inspiration, Anton Bantock, an incorrigible traveller, enthusiastic historian, author and artist, established the University of Withywood on retiring from teaching.  You can find out more about the life and works of Anton by clicking here and following the various links.

The volunteers run a programme of events that include talks, discussion groups, visits and walks, as well as drama, music and language skills.
For more details about how to get involved in these fun and informal events click here or use the menu buttons.

A small donation is requested from students when they come to one of the University’s events and this supports the “Sponsorship Fund”. As does the money collected from the sale of books, artwork, Anton’s lecturing, book and video royalties, raffles, open days, Gift Aid funding, donations and subscriptions from the “Friends”.  To discover how this money is used educating young people in the developing world click here
