Ashton Court, in its heyday, was a formidable institution. It was the
centre of enormous estates bridging across three counties. At one time it
was true that everything you could see from Ashton Court was owned by the
Smyths; it was the hub of the community. There, across the park, was the
great house ablaze with lights, and from which issued a hum of purposeful
activity. Its owner, Sir Greville Smyth, was the employer of hundreds of
miners, and the landlord of scores of farmers; the patron o f all local
activities, and the squire to whom the village people touched their caps.
It was the age of great wealth for the few, and grinding hardship and poverty
for many. People new their position in the class system, and most were
content.£1 collected: £1.50 posted UK: £2.50 overseas

Overlooking
the valley of the Somerset Yeo, with a distant view of the sea, and set on the
Failand hillside against a backdrop of ancient woodland, is a fairytale castle.
Its many turrets and gables form a fantastic silhouette against the great bank
of tees which crowns the slopes. Below are the lawns and parterres of a
vast and immaculate secret garden. Remote, mysterious, it was for years
the last of the great feudal domains.
Then - suddenly - in 2001 the doors were opened and the world was permitted to glimpse inside. The guardians of Tyntesfield had evidently jealously preserved its treasures intact; very little had changed for over a hundred years - now that story can be told
