FREDERICK KEBEBE Kenya, 2003 Frederick like many young Kenyans was orphaned before leaving primary school. Whilst living with his grandmother and with a lack of funds he qualified for secondary school. One of our representatives appealed to us about his cause and we raised enough money to see him through and complete secondary education. In 2008 he gained admission to train as a Community Health Worker.
JEROME AZIKE Nigeria, 2003 Jerome was originally an expert manager of a fish farm. Then in 2002 he suffered a motorbike accident which left him badly handicapped, which meant he also lost his job and had to learn how to walk again. He applied to us for help in medical expenses and training to become a computer instructor which he completed, he has now established a new career for himself in the Delta province in Nigeria.
MARTIN NDIA NDAI Cameroon, 2002 Martin like many other young Cameroonians was a victim of the corruption in the higher echelons of state education in Cameroon. Applications for jobs, scholarships and studying abroad are passed in favour of Minister’s sons and daughters, or those that could bribe the officials. Against the odds and with his own perseverance he completed a Business & Economics degree. Our sponsorship also helped him complete a training course which has enabled him to find work as a civil servant in the capital, Yaounde.
HADLEY GULAVI Kenya, 2002 Hadley comes from a very poor and struggling family and from an early age he has shown a flair for creativity. His warm and gentle courtesy appealed to us, so we sponsored him to do an Art & Design course. He now makes African screen printed clothes for a company in The Great Lakes Province.
PATRICK KIGADI Kenya, 2000 With our sponsorship programme it is never possible to predict if a sponsoree will even find work at all. And within some of the countries where we operate, the students we try to help, have to endure war, famine, many different diseases and illnesses, loss of family, corruption and economic struggles of epic proportions. Patrick was one of many children who used to try and complete his homework before day light fell as his family could not afford Kerosene lamps. We raised enough money to clothe and keep Patrick in secondary school until he passed with flying colours. In 2009 he graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University with a degree in Mathematics & Computer Science.
TAMILARASON India, 1999 We were sent Tamilarason’s story and photograph and for a long time it was pinned to our notice board waiting for a sponsor. Eventually we took him on while he was studying his Masters Degree in Microbiology. In 2004 he obtained his degree and has now found work in a mineral water company in Tiruchirappalli, South India.
DANIEL BOATENG Ghana, 1998 Daniel suffered from many setbacks as child including not being able to walk properly and losing his father. Despite being handicapped his evident intelligence earned him a place in a secondary school in Korforidua. We then sponsored him and he was accepted into the Modern Languages Faculty at Accra University. He now runs a successful cyber café in Accra.
GRACE AWINYO Kenya, 1997 Grace was an orphan who was desperately interested in training as a nurse and after finishing her studies she excelled in her employment at Masaba hospital. She was working when the bombing of the American Embassy in Nairobi occurred and she helped many people who had sustained serious injuries. In her last update, she told us that she had gone to work in one of the most deprived areas of Nairobi’s slums and had rescued many homeless orphans.
CHRISEMEKA AZIKE Nigeria, 1993 Chrisemeka is part of a large family who could not finance his enthusiasm towards English and Architecture. We helped kick start his education by sponsoring him to study at Asaba University and after graduating he could earn enough money to apply for further qualifications. Chrisemeka was inspired by our example and set up his own charity to educate and empower young people, specialising in photography and computers.
